The Mexicolas
Jamie moved to Germany at the age of 2 (his father was posted there in the armed forces). In a strange country, with no friends his age, he bonded with his father’s guitar instead. By the age of 6 he was a fledging guitarist.
“It was a really miserable time for me. I overcame the sheer boredom of being in a foreign land by learning to play the guitar. I just picked it up and wrote songs all the time....”
He moved back to the UK 10 years later and joined a performing arts school in his native hometown of Huddersfield, and having fronted various bands all around Yorkshire and the North East he eventually decided to stay in one place and make music again of his own. Jamie heard about an amazing drummer called Tim Trotter who was living and performing out in South Africa at the time and heard he was moving back to England via a mutual friend and decided to arrange to meet up with him as soon as humanly possible after he’d arrived back... The basis of the band was born.
Jamie
Every wrong turn, right turn, funny turn, second, hour and day of my life has brought me here, now. I not only live for this bands music, but if pushed far enough I would most certainly die for it too. At last my fingers are uncrossed, and the knives are out. This line up is the last incarnation, we were made for each other. Forget influences, highlights, lowlights and pigeonholes. The only holes we want to fill are the ones in people’s heads, and hearts. We are serious. We are The Mexicolas.
TIM
When we embarked on The Mexicolas journey back in April 2004, it was obvious to us that there was going to be nothing contrived or pretentious about our music, image or general demeanour. On our first day in Birmingham, Jamie and myself sat in our new studio / HQ (a converted office space on the 2nd floor of a warehouse) with just 2 acoustic guitars, an analogue Dictaphone, 4 walls and a handful of sketchy ideas. To tell you the truth, we really didn’t know which direction the music was destined but we knew which bands we loved and what we wanted to achieve. Now we are 3 people sharing that same vision. What you hear and see now is a reaction to everything we’ve been before. It’s blatant, beautiful and honesty.
Del
Half Wiltshire, Half Somerset with a dash of Portuguese, Del came to Birmingham from the wilds of Wiltshire. Scorching up the M5 in his red reliant robin. He came to do a degree in economics and to see if the streets were paved in gold. His first band, Mink, came close to getting a deal on a few occasions but it was not meant to be. They changed their name to Theory of Everything and released their own album in 2001 before splitting in 2002. ‘…I learnt so much through those days, especially working with talented guys who stretched my playing and song writing, and also influenced my creativity in a big way…’ Del passed through a number of bands, amassing some amazing experiences, including an electric recording session at Abbey Road. ‘The second you walk through the front door you are enveloped in a magical area it gives you a tremendous sense of awe’. However, Del couldn’t find that ‘special something’ and turned to touring as a guitar tech for inspiration. ‘ I toured loads with King Adora and it was incredible looking out night after night over a sea of euphoric faces. Fans singing along to the songs, such energy bouncing around the place. It was beautiful. And I learnt the importance of being in a gang, having your brothers around. Being in a bubble and grinning insanely at the fact that it doesn’t feel like work’. All fired up Del wrote an album for his new project Dewy Albind, but a severe lack of money forced it to be shelved. He toured with a singer songwriter but it still wasn’t right. ‘It was ok but I realised I need loud distorted guitars’. A change encounter, when Jamie spotted Del in a phone box led to a jam, and in thirty short minutes the magic began. ‘I remember reading hammer of the gods and being jealous of Led Zepplins first rehearsal. The description of the energy and connection between them all was something I always wanted to experience for myself. So when we got together and our eyes sparkled and our hearts glowed I knew I’d found it. Something special. The adventure has just begun…
The band count The Police, QOTSA, Mark Lanegan, Jason Falkner, Wes Montgomery and The Stranglers as a few of their influences, although The Mexicolas write truly original music that have deep and powerful melodies, with a wise, soulful voice that belies the band’s years.
The Mexicolas’ repertoire stretches from heart-wrenching ballads to fiery rock numbers, and they can’t wait to share them…
“...Really, we would love the songs to be heard on a massive scale, whilst staying true to ourself. We only ever want to write honest believable songs...”
